What attracted you as a director to Lend Me A Tenor?
My wife Erin was in this show a few years ago at the Sketch Club. It was a funny , fast paced show. I always thought it would be a hoot to direct. When it became available at the Road Company, I said "Hell yes--I'll do it."
Can you describe the plot of Lend Me A Tenor?
The plot---let me see... Funny, funnier, funniest. To me the plot means nothing. I only use it as a guide..then I rewrite the show..... JUST KIDDING!!
I found this quote on the internet and it sums the show up precisely
"Lend Me a Tenor" has every element of a true farce: an improbable (but still possible) plot involving two-dimensional, high-society characters who slam a lot of doors, fall down a lot, mistake each other for someone else, and wind up happily ever after in the end."
from a review by Eric Snider in September 1997
In terms of direction, are plays that are based on farce harder or easier to direct than those based in reality?
I think when you are directing a farce timing is everything. The actors have to come across as "real" people that end up in exaggerated situations. The comedy comes from their reactions to these situations.
What do you hope audiences come away from Lend Me A Tenor with?
A fun night at the theater and (I hope) a belly ache from laughing so hard. |
